2023 colour trends: Lavender & Lilac
Part 3 - Let's discuss purple!
More specifically, lavender and lilac. Standing solid for some time, these purple hues have been gaining traction in graphic design, branding and product trends for 2023.
Creative Market singles out Holo Lilac, a glistening, futuristic version as their colour of the Winter/Spring 23 season. Building on this, we see Digital Lavender cited by the colour and trend forecasters Coloro and WGSN as hot for fashion, jewellery and accessories in 2023.
The Pantone Company have Gray Lilac and Plein Air sitting in a palette alongside their colour of the year, Viva Magenta and, finally, lavender appears to be ending the year totally elbows-out in the 2023 trend forecasts for Christmas product, décor and design - great to focus on if, like me, you are planning your Christmas product and marketing strategy now (see more about the Christmas trends later in this post).
Creative lavender and lilac colour palettes
Seen partnered with both the obvious and unusual suspects, inclusive lavender and lilac are lending themselves to colour palettes that satisfy almost any creative style aesthetic or application, from timeless neutral to retro 80s goth via a little bit of a spicy, 70's update.Popular for Spring and Summer, nature-inspired, natural pastels in the form of persimmon, lemon and blue stand apart from traditional, teeth-tingling sherbet tones to marry with lilac and lavender in a chic palette removed from the soapy, bubble-gum colour stories of past.
... or appearing with earthy, spicy colours such as ochre, earth tones and brown.
Christmas 2023 trends
Lilac and lavender appear in one of the trending colour palettes of the season based on neutrals and muted, mature versions of the traditional reds, greens and golds (think dark magenta, subtle teal and matte, pale gold). Here, it seems focus is on organic shapes, interesting textural surface applications and use of materials such as glass and ceramics for tree and home décor with a nod to quality and timeless longevity rather than fast-fashion, disposable quantity (watch out for a post about Christmas trends in the near future).Like the other trending colours for 2023, lavender and lilac are inspired by nature and work hard, morphing to work across different colour palettes and aesthetics. They reflect calm, wellbeing, strength and purity as the world heals post-pandemic. Further, the categorisation of the hues as 'digital' and 'holo' are conceived from the merging of digital and physical that was increasingly experienced and normalised during lockdown.
There's a sense that these colours have been highlighted because they already permeate our lives on different levels rather than as an interesting, passing fad. Used in unusual palettes, there's a sense of moving forwards with strength and control and their association with balance and nature evokes mindfulness of environmental issues and challenges. As far as trends go, it sounds counter intuitive, but will we start to see more longevity or adaptability built in to minimise throw away consumerism and fast fashion?
